Youngsters in Lichfield are discovering their engineering prowess by building two brand new buggies bought by their school.
Staff at Shenstone Lodge, in Birmingham Road, called on the help of the UK’s leading online auto accessories retailer Proppa to provide state-of-the-art buggies in a dismantled form, rather than selling them assembled and ready for use.
Over the summer term Key Stage 3 pupils at the school, which specialises in the care and education of children with emotional and behavioural difficulties, will build up the buggies ready for use in races.
Staff at the school are also planning in the longer term for the children to build an off-road track as a proper racing facility for the buggies.
Mel Keating, Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator at Shenstone Lodge, said: “We are thrilled that Proppa was able to help us. This is an exciting project for the children which also brings in key elements of English, Math’s and Science. In a series of weekly sessions the children will be working with a retired engineer, Dave Egerton, who will give them guidance in putting the buggies together.
“The plan then is to keep assembling and dismantling the buggies with every new group of children as they reach Key Stage Three. They will be of tremendous benefit to the school for many years to come.”
Adam Weaver, Founder and Managing Director of www.proppa.com, said: “It is unusual for us to deliver buggies in a dismantled state but of course we are happy to oblige. We are delighted our products will be helping children at Shenstone Lodge develop their engineering skills and hopefully reach their full engineering potential.”
